Brand Identity Built From the Position, Not the Logo

A brand identity is not a logo. It is the position your company holds in the market, the voice it speaks in, the visual system that makes it recognizable, and the story your sales team and your website tell the same way. I build it in that order. The position comes first. The design comes from it.

Most rebrands fail for one reason. They start with design. A new logo, new colors, a launch post, and six months later the company is still explaining what it does the old way. Nothing underneath changed.

I do it differently. Before anyone opens a design tool, we decide what the company stands for, who it is for, and what it should be known for. That is the position. It is the hardest part and the part most agencies skip.

Once the position is set, the identity almost writes itself. The voice follows from who you are talking to. The visual system follows from what you want to be remembered for. The story follows from the difference we found. My SliiceXR team then designs and produces it: the mark, the type, the colors, the templates and the rules, so every deck and every page holds together.

When to do it: when the business has evolved faster than the brand. When the website sounds like every competitor. When sales and marketing tell two different stories. Not because someone is bored of the logo.

What you get is not a style guide that sits in a drawer. It is a brand your leadership team can explain in a sentence, your sales team can sell from, and your market can recognize.

Our process

  1. Step 1
    Find the difference
I sit with leadership and work out why someone should choose you, what the market thinks you are, and what it should think you are. That becomes the position, in one sentence a CEO and a customer both understand.
  2. Step 2
    Write the identity
Name, tagline, messaging, voice and the story. Written so a salesperson, a recruiter and a website can all say the same thing.
  3. Step 3
    Design the system
My SliiceXR team designs the mark, the colors, the type and the rules for using them. The design expresses the position instead of decorating it.
  4. Step 4
    Roll it out
Website, decks, collateral, social, signage. Everything your company puts out looks and sounds like one company.

Ms. Oaks has worked extremely hard to develop an identity for my brand. As an author and business owner, it is extremely hard to build your brand while also establishing an identity with your audience. Ms. Oaks and her team helped me to hone in on my audience and provide me with a detailed analysis (color scheme, brand messaging, etc.) to build my brand and establish myself as a reputable name in my industry. Her keen eye for detail and willingness to go the extra mile has allowed me to focus more on other aspects of my brand and business while also ensuring that my messaging and brand is consistent and headed in the right direction.

Catherine built my website, then rebuilt it as my consulting thesis sharpened. Each time, she turned a moving target into a brand that showcases my work. She has a gift for taking an idea I only half articulate and giving it a clear, modern, confident form. What I did not expect was how much I would enjoy the process: she is generous with her talent, quick to champion my success as if it were her own, and somewhere along the way she went from collaborator to friend. Working with Catherine is one of the easiest and happiest yeses in my business.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my company needs a rebrand or just a new logo?

If the business has changed and the brand has not, it is a rebrand. If the position is still right and only the visuals are dated, it is a refresh. I start with the position either way, because a new logo on the wrong position is money spent on nothing.

Why do rebrands fail?

They start with design instead of strategy. The colors change, the story does not, and the market sees the same company in new clothes. A rebrand built from a clear position does not have that problem.

Who does the design work?

My SliiceXR team, to the position and the direction we set together. You work with me on the strategy and the identity. The same team then produces the mark, the system and the rollout.

How long does a brand identity project take?

It depends on the size of the company and how much has to be rolled out. Book a conversation and I will tell you what yours would involve before anything starts.
